In psychoanalytic psychotherapy, you and your experience are at the center of the process. The golden rule is simply that you come in and talk about what's on your mind. There's no need to edit your thoughts or hold back your feelings. You're invited to bring all of yourself to our sessions. The work becomes increasingly deep over time as you gain ever greater insight into the meaning and significance of your life experiences and relationships.
Therapy sessions take place one or more times per week. Emotional material is examined with thoroughness and deliberateness, and can include the past, the present, dreams and fantasies. A trusting therapeutic relationship is essential. The therapy space is a warm, encouraging environment where you are empowered to look deeply into your experience, let go of old patterns and take control of developing new ways of relating to others, yourself, and the world.
The length of treatment is up to you. Generally speaking, the longer the time you spend in psychotherapy the better results you will have. Many people will notice changes after three to six months of therapy. However, to address the underlying emotional roots of most problems, long term psychotherapy is an even better option.
